Where is Bweza Gorilla Lodge located?

Bweza Gorilla Lodge is located along the boundary line of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The lodge isn’t far from Rushaga gorilla trekking briefing area. Bweza lies in the remotest part of the country –southwestern Uganda.

Getting to Bweza can be done by road where you can spend at least 8-9 hours driving from Kampala or Entebbe. Or use 4-5 hours to reach the lodge starting from the heart of Kigali and your journey involves crossing Katuna or Chanika border.

By air, there is also an option of taking a flight and this is the quickest way to reach to Bweza Gorilla Lodge. It involves departing from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) or Kajjansi to Kisoro Airstrip where a professional driver can pick you up and drop you off to Bweza Lodge for relaxation. Flights to Kisoro Airstrip take not more than 2 hours although the entire journey can be determined by the kind of weather.

What to expect

Visitors with plans to retire at the Bweza Gorilla Lodge have a chance to explore Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Southwestern Uganda. Bwindi is lying in Southwestern end of Uganda and prides itself of diverse species including 120 mammal species, 350 species of birds, different colorful butterflies, and plant species.

4 regions/sectors make up Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and include Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija, and Buhoma. Each of these regions consist of already habituated gorilla groups where primate enthusiasts can start their gorilla trekking adventures.

Gorilla trekking is the key tour highlight in Bwindi and is a lifetime opportunity for you to encounter the massive mountain gorillas in the wild. If you intend to take part in the gorilla trek, then consider securing a valid gorilla permit in advance at around USD 800 per person.

At Bweza Lodge, you can connect to Rushaga to get briefed about the safety measures or rules to be followed when in the wild tracking gorillas. At Rushaga, you can also be assigned a gorilla group and park ranger guide to accompany you. The habituated gorilla groups to expect to explore during the gorilla trekking adventure in Rushaga include Busingye, Mishaya, Nshongi, Bweza, Kahungye, Kutu, Rwigi, Mucunguzi, and many others.

Each of the Rushaga gorilla groups is tracked by a maximum of 8 (eight) guests per day. The gorilla trek takes 2-6 hours and the adventure includes an hour for visitors to enjoy a face-to-face encounter with a family of mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorilla habituation –This is also done in Rushaga region on the family being observed and monitored in order to make it get used to human presence before it is officially opened for actual gorilla trekking adventure. Engaging in a gorilla habituation also requires a valid gorilla permit and each permit costs USD 1500 per person. Gorilla habituation allows visitors to enjoy a maximum of 4 hours with gorillas.
