The biodiverse Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Park was gazetted in 1991 and extends over the land area of 331sq.km.

At Bwindi, there are 4 main sectors –Ruhija, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Buhoma. The park’s diverse species include 120 mammal species, 310 butterfly species, 350 bird species, 27 frog species, geckos, chameleons and more than 1000 flowering plant species which include 104 fern species and 200 tree species.

The different species inhabited within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest include mountain gorillas, African elephants, chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, l’hoest monkeys, vervet monkeys, giant forest hogs, red-tailed monkeys, and varied bird species.

The diverse bird species of Bwindi include the grey gecko-shrike, strange weaver bird, tit hylia, Rwenzori batis, Shelly’s greenbul, dusky twin spot, Chapin’s flycatcher, regal sunbird, Kivu ground thrush, red throated alethe, bar-tailed trogon, montane oriole, African wood owl and others. The main birding trails in Bwindi include the Bamboo zone, Mubwindi swamp trail, and Buhoma waterfall trail.

At Bwindi, there are several experiences one can enjoy including birding, forest walk/hiking (available hiking trails in this park include bamboo trail, Muzabajiro, waterfall, Kashasha River trail, Habinyanja, River Ivy trail, and more), gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experience.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park –accessible within 53 minutes’ drive off from Bwindi Panorama Resort. The park lies in Kisoro, Southwestern Uganda and is most popular as the only place where gold meets silver. Mgahinga is also Uganda’s smallest park with land area coverage of 33.7sq.km.

Mgahinga NP expands within the Virunga Mountain ranges and features 3 inactive Virunga Volcanoes; Mt. Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura (Muhavura). This protected area sits at an elevation range of 2227 to 4127m and forms part of the Nile River watershed area.

Its position within the Virungas makes it part of the vast Virunga Conservation Region, a significant area that also encompasses Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park. Its biodiversity is characterized by Albertine rift montane forests, alpine zones, bamboo forest, tree heath, Rwenzori-Virunga montane moorlands, each ranging in the varying altitudes.

The park’s diverse faunal species include the endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, bushbucks, giant forest hogs, elephants, leopards, black-fronted duikers, buffaloes, black and white colobus monkeys, etc. Variety of endemic Albertine rift bird species also exist within this park including the collared apalis, red-throated alethe, dusky crimson wing, handsome spur fowl, red-faced woodland warblers, Rwenzori double-collared sunbird, Kivu ground thrush, mountain masked apalis, grauer’s swamp warblers, regal sunbird, archer’s ground robin, and others.
